Shopping Cart Disco

I’ve kinda stepped away from the blogging scene these days, but when something sparkly comes up I can’t help myself cause I still have some of that slimy green blogger blood in me. Also, it’s not usual for me to blog about other blogs but I felt it important to blog about the infamous Shopping Cart Disco today! (SCD)

What is with that name anyway? lol

I was first introduced to SCD when I saw a plurk about a certain secret many moons ago. Due to the people involved I kept up with it each week. After seeing the hurt it caused some people and witnessing some rather malicious secrets (not by SCD) I stopped following this feature of the site with some exception.

That was my last experience with SCD until I saw a plurk about the “What I Like” feature of the site maintained by Cajsa Lilliehook. My first love of Second Life will always be the artistic side of it and she offers a wide variety of photos she finds interesting to her and shares detailed reasons why she “likes it”. It often helps me to learn something regarding a picture that I never noticed before and offers some great insight in a picture I often may miss. What I find most interesting is she doesn’t forget us newbies who are “trying” at it. I was impressed mostly when she introduced a photo that had no post-editing done, just a simple screen shot but gave reasons why the simple screen shot was impressive to her. If you’re into SL art and photography I would encourage you to follow “What I Like”.

Since then I have seen many great blog postings by other staff members at SCD. What impresses me the most however is their fairness and informative approach to whatever subject matter and “news and events” going on. They give an informative opinion based on facts, not gossip and hearsay. Oftentimes as I’ve read various articles where I can’t help but wonder if a lot of research and time went into it as well. I find my self often checking their Second Life Events Calendar to keep up with you all!

Recently another blogger totally unrelated and unaffiliated with SCD got a lot of negative attacks made against her and her blog site which were unfair. It was impressive to me how SCDstepped in to support the blogger in a fair and factual approach (not nauseating fan girling) I’m not going to rehearse the whole story but you can read about it here.

What motivated me however to write this blog post on SCD was due to their most recent post “An Open Letter” by Kesseret Steeplechase. You can read it here. Again, I’m not going to rehearse over the details because there are actually several notable things that could be mentioned. What impressed me the most however was the professionalism & behind the scenes approach to this. They could have very easily posted the secret mentioned in the letter (Again, you may have to go read the letter to understand) but they chose not to out of nothing but pure professionalism, compassion and concern. You can read a heartfelt plea to a total stranger. I got chills when I read it and I’ve chalked this blog post as one of my all time favorites. They could have very easily posted the secret to attract the attention, controversy and shock factor it would have generated thus gaining some hits and attention to their site. They chose not to. That is what impressed me the most.

My comments about SLsecrets are my own opinion. It’s one of their more popular features of the site. They must be doing something right however for it to last this long. How are they doing something I find terrible so right? lol Because of their professional approach to it. I say this with experience. Although they do a good job at trying to catch those that are “subtle” attacks at people and businesses, they obviously don’t know everyone on the grid. I saw a secret posted once and I communicated it to them and they were quick to take it down. I think this is the only way you can manage something like this…professionalism, consistency and an unbiased approach. And to give SLsecrets some credit, there are some that are positive, cute and endearing which do get noticed as well, but like anything else people don’t remember those; it’s the negative ones that get more of the attention.

Even though I find the SLsecrets portion of the site disheartening, that’s the beauty of the website, they offer us the “whole” package without any bias. They are consistent and reliable. They provide us with fair and informative information while ignoring the pressures of clicks and other social involvement and activity. They call it as they see it, and for what it is. Readers can then judge for themselves, skip over the material they don’t like and visit the material more suited for them. SCD, offers something for everyone....in a fair approach.

Kudos to the whole SCD staff, keep up the great work!
